Society s Affect On Body Image - 1096 Words

Thanh- Thao Duong Univ 111: Williams December 2, 2015 Unit 3 Essay Society’s affect on â€Å"Body Image† â€Å"Body image† can be defined as the way someone perceives their body and assumes that’s how others perceive them. The concept of body image can be seen as a great concern, from society’s affects through the media, social and peer pressure, to health issues and the actions taken due to body image shaming. Over time, the â€Å"ideal† body image has evolved into an idea that is simply unrealistic and unattainable. The standards for beauty has never been consistent and has always had constant changes. Early 1800’s, it was ideal for both men and women to be curvy and have somewhat of a heavy weight. Being plump was a sign that you were well off†¦show more content†¦2011). Statistics remain constant across gender, age, marital status and race. This shows that everyone is concerned with body image and that it is not gender based, both men and women are affected by each other’s perspect ive of the â€Å"ideal† body. Women are expected to be skinny, busty and fit, while men are expected to be lean and hunky. Not only does the media affect the way humans perceive themselves, but also social and peer pressures. The prevalence of anorexia is almost 4% in women between the ages of 15-24 and almost 2% in women between the ages of 25-34 (Costa-i-Font 2013). It is said that the likelihood for someone to have an eating disorder is greatly affected by a woman’s peers. It is believed that the more peers a woman has, the less likely she will be anorexic. This ties to the term â€Å"popularity†; in grade school, students are constantly looking up to the â€Å"popular† girl in school, wondering why they can not be as pretty as her or have as many friends as her. Teenagers these days spend most of their time being concerned about their body weight and the way they look. However, this is prevalent because of the pressures they feel from both family and friends. Although it is not purposely inflicted, hearing criticism from the people you love the most has the greatest affect on how a teenager views themselves. 81% of 10-year olds are already afraid of being fat, this is mainly tied to social and peer pressure (Mellin et al. 1991). Seeing a fat kid is not

Is It Education †Education in Hong Kong Free Essays

Education is of utmost importance as it makes a great impact on a person’s whole life. In Finland, kids at the age of 6 or earlier do not have to go to schools, but learn at home through playing games and interacting with people. The teachers there accompany the same group of students for a long time owing to the 9-year compulsory educational system. We will write a custom essay sample on Is It Education – Education in Hong Kong or any similar topic only for you Order Now In Hong Kong, however, ‘education’ seems to have lost its meaning and the educational system is still problematic despite several modifications. The first and major problem is being too examination-oriented. This can be explained by the popularity of tutorial schools. Those ‘super tutors’ focus on helping students acquire a satisfied result in the examination. Many students seek help from them since whether they can further their studies mainly depends on their academic results. Another piece of evidence can be found on our textbooks. Many of them include a particular section merely for the examinations, such as ‘exam tips’, ‘exam skills’ or ‘exam practice’. This also reflects the phenomenon of examination- orientation. Setting academic results as the major criterion of school entry has twisted people’s receptions of education. The existing educational system puts much emphasis on students’ academic performance and neglects the significance of developing other aspects, including moral cultivation, life education and other abilities like interpersonal skills. As a result, people seem to have forgotten what the aims of education actually are. Apart from this problem, some social issues have arisen from Hong Gong’s ‘education’. One of them is the problem of impoverishment, especially the intergenerational poverty and youth poverty. The former one becomes more severe hen the educational system does not allow poor students to get rid of it via education. The latter one can be resulted when the tuition fees of universities are so high that some students have to grant loans from the government and repay them even when they have been working for years. Hong Kong government has spent many resources on education, though, there are still a multitude of problems that the government has to solve. Not only has it become too exam-orientated, but it also deepens some social problems. What the society wants is a real and comprehensive education which allows students to fully utilize their abilities. How to cite Is It Education – Education in Hong Kong, Papers

A Life Changer free essay sample

A Life Changer For as long as I can remember sports have been one of the main focuses of life. Weekends were filled with watching sports games, playing games and going to practices for grade school teams. Every game lasts for ages, which made playing much sweeter. Organized sports became the driving force behind every interest. The weekends playing from dusk until dawn; are some of the best memories of childhood. Sports have also made the bond between father and son much stronger because of the strong connection shared. Sports shape young minds, teaches valuable lessons, and gives hope to millions on an everyday basis. When growing up young Adam Ricca craved to do anything sports related. Every thought he had was somehow always connected to how he could apply that thought to sports. Adam played on as many organized sports teams as he could as child. Baseball was his favorite even though he was not very good at it. We will write a custom essay sample on A Life Changer or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page This made him work harder at becoming better because he wanted to be the best on the team. He never did get there but he learned a few valuable lessons along the way. Adam found that if he worked his butt of at something that mattered to him he would see the results. Another lesson Adam learned was how to be humble. He knew no matter how much work he put in to make himself better, there would always be someone better, faster, stronger. He knew that he had to respect and admire his competition otherwise he would be a sore loser. As Adam grew older his love for sports grew stronger, but his skill diminished. He was okay with that because he knew he was nothing special. Adam started dreaming about a career linked to sports because he felt he would excel in the field of sports. As Adam got to college he realized that a career in sports was a difficult one to chose. He had no idea what field of sports he wanted to go into because he loved them all. One day he realized that sports may not provide the life he wanted to live so he picked something that would: Construction Management. Yes it is not sports but it is something that Adam is passionate about and requires a lot of hard work much like sports requires. Adam will always love sports. He will have to watch and admire from far and he is okay with that. All children should be involved in some type of sport activity. Sports teach teamwork, dedication, humility, focus, patience, practice, along with many others. These characteristics are something that every human is going to need at some point in their life. Sports show how dedication and hard work can pay off in the long run. Nothing in life is going to fall right into place without practicing every day. Without practicing everyday nothing gets any easier. Something people may not realize what sports can teach; is how helping people becomes so rewarding. Seeing teammates do something well brings just as much joy as if one were to do the act themselves. Playing sports keeps minds focused on other things in life as well. You can apply what sports teaches to pretty much anything in life; school, family, friends, anything that takes hard work to accomplish. Sure not everybody is going to accomplish great things. The great thing about sports is that it teaches you that no matter what; as long as you put the work in you will reap the benefits. Look at any professional athlete today: Drew Brees, David Freese, Kevin Durant, etc. These athletes all dealt with adversity and overcame that adversity at some point in their career. What they overcame made them into the men they are today and why they are such great role models for anyone to look up to. My relationship with my father when I was a young teenager was not the best. We loved each other and all, but we did not always see eye to eye and would always have little riffs. One day it all just kind of just disappeared and we started bonding, and now are best friends. This transformation can be credited to sports. A lot of what we do talk about is sports. We could go on for days about something. Our mutual love of sports is what opened up our conversations to other, deeper topics. We talk about everything now a day and we lean on each other for support whenever the other one is hurting. He is the best person to look up to as a role model because there is not a better one out there. It seems silly that sports is something that gave us this huge transformation as father and son and best friends; but sports is the basis for everything that happened. Another great thing about sports is that it can connect people when they do not have that much in common. Many friends have met and become better friends because of bonding through sports. Worldwide sports bring people together when there whether it is a happy or sad occasion. Look at 9/11. People were looking for some way to cope with what had just happened to our great nation. Baseball and football being played only days after what happened giving people hope that our lives could be normal again. In every game someone stood in front of the crowd and gave a speech about what happened and how we needed regularity in our life again and sports was a step towards that. Sports can bring on many emotions like few other things. There are many times watching a sports programs about how this high school team, a college team, a pro team, heck even a grade school team shows outstanding support to people in tragedy or a person in tragedy. These type of programs help people relate to a similar situation and bring out many different emotions. It seems almost every day there are stories about some athlete going out of their way to help someone in need. This shows what great role models that they are for anyone. There is also the argument that they should not be looked up to because of all the bad decisions they have made If you go online you will find as many stories about an athlete doing good as they are doing badly. They are such great role models because they show you how hard you have to work to get something you really want. There is a reason pros make it to the pros. They did not just get there by chance. Athletes inspire young children to reach for the stars and is that not what we are taught every day? Maybe the most important thing that sports can bring anyone is friends. Children encounter their best friends through sports when they are growing up. Children spend a lot of time together whether practicing for the games or just hanging out. These times that children spend together often turn out to be the best memories of their childhood. Friendships made through sports growing up often shape young children into fine young adults. Sports forge great friendships. These friendships are based off of the characteristics that sports teach. Children surround themselves with the right people when they have active participation in sports. This leads to the children to develop into young adults who have their heads on their shoulders because of the good people they have surrounded themselves with. Sports helps you make friends at any time in your life. We as humans crave interaction with other human beings. Sports is one of the best ways to interact with someone because of the interactions you have on and off the field. This is the one of the main reasons people identify with sports so well because it is how they make friendships that last a lifetime. In conclusion, I believe sports have played a major role in whom I have become and who I will continue to become. Sports are always going to be an outlet for people to meet each other and connect with people. Sports make relationships stronger and helps a multitude of people be a better people.

Successful Business Essays - Anti-Defamation League,

Successful Business Does Process, Form, and Strategy make a business successful? The 60's and 70's ADL enjoyed a pre-emptive market share originating from the late 1800's, and became the leader of a growing management consulting practice during 60's and 70's. By the end of the 70's and early 80's they lost their dominant position as the market grew, and they continued to slide as the success of new companies tooled with contemporary technologies and skills, identifiable products, and a singular image gained market strength. ADL's pride was in the freshness of approach to each case, the "Eureka" kind of solutions, and no repetitive job undertaking. Work at ADL was problem oriented, technically based and highly customized. However, the company identity was fragmented and confused and did not have a formal organizational structure. A team of 5-15 people made a unit. There were 2-4 units per section and around 40 sections with $5-10m in revenues for each section. In 1954 ADL attempted to form into 7 divisions but this resulted in fighting over leads and capital resources. ADL's work force was highly innovative, with high morale and a broad range of freedom in work. There was no career ladder within the organization and titles meant little as new jobs allowed for a new hierarchical structure. Strengths and competitive forces during 80's The market in the 70's had started growing from $2b to $40b, and there were a lot of new entrants. As opposed to ADL, they focused on specific areas of management consulting and specialized in a few particular areas. The new entrants also had an effect of segmenting the market into core functional components. ADL was a broad-based non-specific product company, which allowed for capturing many business problems that arose as markets evolved. ADL enjoyed a very strong past, a vast knowledge base and a good R&D facility. The internal organization of company was totally flat which initially worked to their advantage. One major strength was the return of LaMantia to ADL as president, and the redeployment of his process thinking. Main elements of new organization structure ADL's new structure allowed for vertical development and functional orientation. There were 7 directorates divided into three major businesses. Five of them were related to management consulting and were geographically structured. Inside of each directorate were three levels - director, senior consultant and consultant. The entire company structure was tied together with 7 common business processes. Each case would primarily belong to one directorate but would encompass different business processes, making it a matrix-type structure. The idea in creating a business organization structure was to have more accountability, identify specify goals and duties and improve resource allocation. Overhauling the financial area, as well as tightening the planning, budgeting system, and accounting system were additional initiatives implemented. Core business Providing experienced and knowledgeable people to solve company problems was ADL's core business. ADL sold processes focused services ranging from strategies, customer service, supply chain management, information technology, manufacturing, finances, organization and innovation. It concentrated on various industries like chemicals, pharmaceuticals, health-care, automation and telecom. Its three core business units were management consulting (MC), environment and health services (EHS) and technology and product development (TDP). Process thinking & strategy fit Process thinking is identifying, categorizing, and prioritizing business functions, and linking the functions through their informational needs. A strategy is making use of, creating, modifying and tailoring the functionalities to achieve a certain goal. ADL divided its entire operations into 7 processes. The processes fit the ADL strategy by allowing the company to focus on its client relationships, HR and finances and by facilitating its implementation, while costing the effort in terms of its returns. The knowledge of a common process amongst functionality allows continuity and repeatability with skill-sets and identifiable goals. Strategic options for ADL, Recommendation The integrating strategies include a unified company image, cross selling and integration of the three business units, making the three business units into separate sister concerns, developing a cross-business synergy, product, and practice, and single a company strategy - a global industry practice. ADL's strength lies in the vast and varied knowledge, which can be utilized across the three different business units. ADL should position itself as a company with a brand name identity, providing system-wide, varied and integrated solutions, and initiate processes for the cross selling and integration of its three business units.

Comparison of operating Systems essays

Comparison of operating Systems essays Operating systems have evolved from simple standalone and command line programs like MSDOS to distributed multi-user systems like windows and Linux, which support graphical user interface. Every new version of the operating system tries to address the hidden loopholes and to improve the efficiency and security. The file allocation systems and the security implementation are also different between these operating systems. Today's multi user environment has literally stomped out the simple standalone operating system like MSDOS. Windows has also evolved a long way from 16 bit OS to 32-bit operating system. Linux being an open source system is evolving at a faster pace. A comparative study of these three operating systems in context of the important features like user interface, file management, memory management, security implementation would help us discern the similarities and differences between them. MS-DOS was a purely text based operating system before the Dosshell with minimal graphical features was introduced in MS-DOS version 4. Windows is a GUI operating system, which uses a standard display mode for the desktop. Linux by default was a text based (command line) operating system but now users can choose from a variety of graphical user interfaces that are provided now by the X window based graphical display. Two of the common interfaces being the GNOME, KDE. The KDE has a comprehensive office suit, web browser and text editor. The configurability of these interfaces is what differentiates Linux from windows allowing for highly customizable desktop environments. Another key difference between windows and Linux is that the Linux operating system offers graphical user interface abstraction' at the network level as against the hardware level abstraction' offered by windows and other operating systems. [Nathan's Both Linux and windows use the process model. The...

3 Rules of Architecture and How to Win the Big Prize

3 Rules of Architecture and How to Win the Big Prize On the back of the Pritzker medallion are three words: Firmness, Commodity, and Delight. These rules of architecture define the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize, considered the highest honor that a living architect can attain. According to the Hyatt Foundation which administers the Prize, these three rules recall the principles set down by the ancient Roman architect Marcus Vitruvius Pollio: firmitas, utilitas, venustas. Vitruvius described the need for architecture to be well-built, useful by serving a purpose, and beautiful to look at. These are the same three principles that Pritzker juries apply to todays architects. Did You Know? The Pritzker, or Pritzker Architecture Prize, is an international award given each year to a living architect who, in the opinion of a select jury, has made profound achievements in the world of architecture. Laureates of the Pritzker Architecture Prize receive $100,000, a certificate, and a bronze medallion. The Pritzker Prize was established in 1979 by Jay A. Pritzker (1922-1999) and his wife Cindy Pritzker. The Pritzkers made a fortune by founding the Hyatt hotel chain. The Prize is funded through the familys Hyatt Foundation. Vitruvius famous multi-volume De Architectura, written around 10 B.C. explores the role of geometry in architecture and outlines the need to build all kinds of structures for all classes of people. Vitruvius rules are sometimes translated this way:   All these must be built with due reference to durability, convenience, and beauty. Durability will be assured when foundations are carried down to the solid ground and materials wisely and liberally selected; convenience, when the arrangement of the apartments is faultless and presents no hindrance to use, and when each class of building is assigned to its suitable and appropriate exposure; and beauty, when the appearance of the work is pleasing and in good taste, and when its members are in due proportion according to correct principles of symmetry. - De Architectura, Book I, Chapter III, Paragraph 2 Firmness, Commodity, and Delight Who would have guessed that in 2014 the most prestigious award in architecture would go to an architect who was not a celebrity- Shigeru Ban. The same thing happened in 2016 when Chilean architect Alejandro Aravena received the architecture prize. Could the Pritzker jury be telling us something about the three rules of architecture? Like the 2013 Pritzker Laureate, Toyo Ito, Ban has been an architect of healing, designing sustainable housing for Japans earthquake and tsunami victims. Ban also has circled the globe providing relief after natural disasters in Rwanda, Turkey, India, China, Italy, Haiti, and New Zealand. Aravena does the same in South America. The 2014 Pritzker Jury said of Ban that His sense of responsibility and positive action to create architecture of quality to serve societys needs, combined with his original approach to these humanitarian challenges, make this years winner an exemplary professional. Before Ban, Aravena, and Ito came the first Chinese recipient, Wang Shu, in 2012. At a time when Chinas cities were choking in over-urbanization, Shu continued to defy his countrys quick-build attitude of over-industrialization. Instead, Shu insisted that his countrys future could become modernized while tethered to its traditions. Using recycled materials, said the 2012 Pritzker Citation, he is able to send several messages on the careful use of resources and respect for tradition and context as well as give a frank appraisal of technology and the quality of construction today, particularly in China. By awarding architectures highest honor to these three men, what is the Pritzker jury trying to tell the world? How to Win a Pritzker Prize In choosing Ban, Ito, Aravena, and Shu, the Pritzker juries are reasserting old values for a new generation. The Tokyo-born Ban was only 56 years old when he won. Wang Shu and Alejandro Aravena were only 48. Certainly not household names, these architects have undertaken a variety of projects both commercial and noncommercial. Shu has been a scholar and teacher of historic preservation and renovation. Bans humanitarian projects include his ingenious use of common, recyclable materials, like cardboard paper tubes for columns, to quickly construct dignified shelters for victims of disasters. After the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake, Ban helped bring order to a devastated community by building the Hualin Elementary School from cardboard tubes. On a larger scale, Bans 2012 design for a cardboard cathedral gave a New Zealand community a beautiful temporary structure expected to last 50 years while the community rebuilds its cathedral, decimated by the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. Ban sees the beauty of carboard concrete tube forms; he also started the trend for reusing shipping containers as residential properties. Being named a Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate establishes these men in history as some of the most influential architects of modern times. Like many middle-aged architects, their careers are just beginning. Architecture is not a get rich quick pursuit, and for many the riches never materialize. The Pritzker Architecture Prize seems to be recognizing the architect who isnt seeking celebrity, but who follows ancient tradition - the architects duty, as defined by Vitruvius - to create architecture of quality to serve societys needs. Thats how to win a Pritzker Prize in the 21st century. ENTERAL NUTRITION Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

ENTERAL NUTRITION - Essay Example The purpose of this study was to determine the practices of enteral nutrition and procedures among adults in intensive care units (Fulbrook et al., p. 163). The independent variables were adults in intensive care units while the dependent variables were practices of enteral feeding. A hypothesis of this study was that timely administration of enteral feeding could minimize complications in the ICU and improve the recovery rates among adult patients in ICU. (Fulbrook et al.,p. 166). A progression of worldwide studies has demonstrated that, in numerous ICUs, health care providers do not begin enteral nutrition for all qualified patients. Postponing timing in the organization, and a few highlights having an effect on a conveyance may lead to disappointment in individual encouraging targets (Fulbrook et al., p. 174). This article focuses on a literature review with the aim of helping establish the criterion for enteral nutrition among the critically ill as well as helping identify timely initiation among those eligible. Proper assessments are essential before initiating this mode of feeding. (Fulbrook et al.,p. 178). Enteral feeding is a necessity to optimize caloric targets. The research suggests that enteral nutrition to commence within 24-48 hours and the nurse should monitor the patient for any complications arising from this feeding method. The reported troubles in improving calorific admission in critically ill patients have driven the ICU group to distinguish proof based rules to create models of NS and enhance persistent results. (Fulbrook et al.,p. 176). Early start of EN, the lower term of mechanical ventilation, decrease in the unseemly utilization of parenteral sustenance (PN), potential to decrease sepsis-related complexities, intrusions in conveyance and diminished danger of death. Criminal Justice in the Movie Gridiron Gang Review

Criminal Justice in the Gridiron Gang - Movie Review Example The Camp Kilpatrick serves as the "last stop" for juvenile offenders before they are finally transferred to jail with the adults. The essence of retribution is encapsulated in the statement: "Let the punishment fit the crime" which is actually reflected in Gridiron Gang. Under this context, the degree of the harshness of the crime committed should be proportionate to the seriousness of the crime that was committed. Simply put, retribution is somewhat a backward-looking type of theory which looks to the past in order to know what to do in the present. In the context of the film, this is manifested through the number of years that a convicted person should spend inside the jail. Meanwhile, deterrence is usually classified into two categories: general deterrence and specific deterrence. General deterrence basically uses the individual who is sentenced for a crime as means of inducing the public not to commit any forms of crime. On the other hand, specific deterrence means punishing the offender to prevent the offender himself from committing other crimes in the future. Their detention itself is actually a means to convey to the other people that these offenders must not be emulated; meanwhile, the offenders themselves would be discouraged to commit another crime given the stigma that they could get from the society. Meanwhile, rehabilitation asserts for changing the offender through correctional means like the football team that is initiated by Sean. It is a good way of motivating the teenagers to turn a new leaf and also serves as a good way of diverting their attention into worthwhile activities. Instead of thinking about the punishment that they are given, they would be more focused on forging camaraderie and sportsmanship among their teammates, as well as opponents in the game. Rehabilitation is considered more effective among first time and non-violent offenders. Â

The volume of oxygen gas produced in a certain time Essay Example for Free

The volume of oxygen gas produced in a certain time Essay I will also being doing 3 repeats of each reaction in order to get a set of more reliable and accurate results because they results will vary. The reactions will be as follows: 1) 5 cm3 of H2O2 and 5 cm3 of yeast (100% of yeast) 2) 5 cm3 of H2O2, 4 cm3 of yeast and 1 cm3 of water (80% of yeast) 3) 5 cm3 of H2O2, 3 cm3 of yeast and 2 cm3 of water (60% of yeast) 4) 5 cm3 of H2O2, 2 cm3 of yeast and 3 cm3 of water (40% of yeast) 5) 5 cm3 of H2O2, 1 cm3 of yeast and 4 cm3 of water (20% of yeast) 6) 5 cm3 of H2O2 and 5 cm3 of water (0% of yeast) (Control of experiment). This is how the experiment will be carried out after setting up the apparatus: 1) Use syringe to add y cm3 of yeast into the conical flask. 2) Use a second syringe to add the x cm3 of water depending on how much yeast is going to be used. (Look at the list above) Make sure volume of gas in syringe is still 0 cm3. 3) Use a third syringe to put 5 cm3 of H2O2 into the conical flask and use the other hand to start the timer on the stop watch at the same time as the H2O2 is added. (Leave syringe in the tube so it stays air tight). 4) Note the volume of gas given off in cm3 when the timer reaches 15 seconds. 5) Rinse conical flask and then repeat with 80%, 60%, 40%, 20%, 0% of yeast (use the list of reactions above for volumes) 6) Repeat each reaction 3 times Safety Always wear lab coats, glasses and gloves because H2O2 is a substance that very corrosive and can cause lots of damage to the skin and it can also blind if there is contact with the eyes. If there are any spillages onto the skin or it seems you have a burning sensation on your skin, rinse immediately and inform teacher. If there is any contact between eyes and H2O2 inform the teacher quickly and rinse until the teacher attends to you. Variables and Fair Test In this experiment I will have to keep certain variable the same in order to get accurate and reliable results. In total there are 7 variables in this experiment and they are the following:   pH   Temperature   Enzymes Concentration   Substrate Concentration Total volume   Time   Oxygen produced Out of all of these variables there is one Dependent Variable, this is oxygen produced variable because this is what I am measuring by altering one of the other variables. Apart from the dependent variable all of the rest are independent variables and so therefore any one of these could alter the dependent variable giving me unreliable results. Therefore I will now explain what these variables can do and what to do with them in order to keep them constant. The variable pH is important because if the pH of the solution in which the enzyme is present is too low or too high the enzyme will not function properly because the pH will damage the shape of the enzyme and the shape of the active site making it so that the substrate molecule will not be able to fit into the active site, thus not allowing the enzyme to break it down. This will mean that the rate of oxygen produced will slow down. In my experiment I will keep the pH about 7 because this is Catalases optimum pH and this maintaining of pH is not difficult because all the substance that I am going to use will be neutral pH. This damaging of the enzyme is called Denaturing and is permanent.. Enzymes as I said earlier were proteins and this is why they can be denatured very easily. Temperature is important because it is able to increase the rate of oxygen produced and also decrease the rate of oxygen produced. I know it can increase the reaction rate because if there is a higher temperature the particles would have more kinetic energy and therefore there would be a faster rate of collisions and a higher % of successful collisions because since the particles would have more energy it would be easier to reach the activation energy and so more reactions (this would be the opposite if it was a lower temperature). The rate of oxygen produced could be decreased by the fact that proteins can easily be damaged by heat so if there is a high temperature the enzyme can be denatured and if there is a low temperature they can become inactive. My experiment will be done at room temperature. Enzyme concentration is not a problem because this is the variable which I am changing to find out the effects it has on the dependent variable. Substrate concentration can alter my results in two ways. One is that it will make my results quicker than they should be, if I put a higher volume in some and lower in others because from Collision Theory I have learnt that if there is a higher concentration of a substance in a solution it will have more collision which means more reactions and therefore this will make my results quicker than if I used a lower concentration of it. I can solve this problem by using the same volume of H2O2 in all my reactions. The second way that substrate concentration can affect my results is that it can level off the rate of oxygen made, if all the substrate is catalysed within my time range. I can solve this problem by simply using excess substrate but at the same time I will still have to keep the volume the same because of the problem I discussed earlier. Total volume must also be kept the same because otherwise the experiment would be unfair due to collision theory. This is because if the numbers of particles are changed, the number of collisions would be changed and therefore this means the number of reactions would change leading to a different amount of gas produced in my experiment. I can solve this by adding water when I use a smaller amount of enzyme. Time is another one of the variable that must be kept the same because if not the reaction would have more or less time to react and so producing different volumes of gas. I can solve this by always letting the reaction go on for the same amount of time; this will be 15 seconds in my experiments.

The Great American Desert :: Edward Abbey Desert Survival Essays

The Great American Desert In the article, â€Å"The Great American Desert†, Edward Abbey (1977) is trying to convince the general public that the desert is not a place for humans to explore. He talks a lot about the dangers of the desert and tries to convince the readers that the desert is not worth wasting your time and going and visiting. I disagree with Abbey. Anyone who has some knowledge about the desert and takes a class or is accompanied by an expert who knows a lot about the desert should be able to venture out in the many great American deserts. Abbeys first survival hint to the desert is, â€Å"stay out of there. Don’t go. Stay home and read a good book.†(p. 204) What fun is staying home if people have the chance to go and explore the desert? Getting a hands on experience and being able to explore the desert in real life is more educating than sitting at home reading a dull book on the desert. David Alloway (1999) once said, â€Å"the historical fact is however, that the human race was cradled in arid lands and people are well adapted to survive in deserts.†( 1) Alloway is a teacher at Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and he teaches a desert survival class. His class philosophy is â€Å"not to fight the desert, but to become part of its ecosystem.†( 1) So the first hint or suggestion before you attempt to go into the desert is being prepared. Being prepared before someone enters the desert should be their number one priority. First off Alloway said people need to have a hat with a wide brim and closed crown so it will protect your head and face from sunlight. Next, wear loose fitting long sleeves and pants so that air can be circulated easy. Sunglasses that exclude ultra-violet light are a necessity to help prevent cataracts later on in life. Some other areas of preparation are carrying sufficient amounts of water, first aid and survival kit for the desert environments, and some useful knowledge. ( 2) These are the major things needed in the preparations of going on and exploration in the desert. The next point Abbey tried to make was about the dangerous animals out in the desert that put a threat to a person life.

The Culling – Creative Writing

‘Dear God†¦' the mayor screamed, as he crawled out from under his desk and pulled open the draw to reveal a steel dagger point, ‘†¦forgive me,' he cried as he charged at the beast's stomach. The only spectator, a smartly dressed Indian who sat like a statue in the shadows at the back of the hall. The hideous beast knocked the weapon from his attacker's hand and leapt onto the mayor's back. Though well built, the mayor's struggles were no match for the beast, and he soon crashed to the floor under the immense weight. ‘I had a wife and child,' He begged for mercy as the snarling beast rammed his face into the blood-smeared floor, snapping his jaw in two. ‘So did my father, sir.' The Indian reminded the dying man, still there at the back of the hall but with a voice that boomed. ‘But†¦' the mayor begged for help from the Indian one last time, though his plea was unheard mainly because of the fact the mayor had a mouthful of blood and broken teeth. The mayor stared at the severed head of a pretty young female; whose body still sat upright over in the line of chairs. Mirrored in her eyes he could see the destruction of all those who he had known. The pretty girl had been the first to die, and he would be the last. Something punctured the side of the mayor's neck; he felt like he was drowning as his lungs filled with blood. He was left to watch the girl's face sink into blackness as his light was snuffed out in the bloodiest of ways. The Indian sat emotionless, his white suit unmarked despite the destruction which had unfolded in front of him. He watched the beast play with the dead mayor like a rag doll, and listened to its screams of pleasure, he had watched the carnage without any remorse. These people had driven his ancestors off their land and murdered his family, this was the only way in which their souls would be put at rest. When the beast ripped out the still warm heart of the Mayors did he allow a smile of satisfaction, then a command for the organ to be crushed. From his pocket, the Indian pulled out a charm which was small, black, and made from some sort of stone it was also in the rough shape of the beast itself. ‘Fugue Santen†¦' He began to chant in his ancient tongue, the beast stood still. The Indian rose from his chair and made his way through the bodies towards the beast. ‘Lasa imenzes†¦' his voice filled the hall as he worked the ancient magic with his chants. He held the amulet in front of him, staring up into the eyes of the beast, which then turned to walk toward the Indian, towering head and shoulders above the Indian, unable to avoid the Indians hypnotic stare. The Indian had finished his spell. The town hall was silent once again but suddenly, a blinding flash of the most immense light came from the charm the indian had in his hand. The light blinded the beast with its beauty. The beast raised its arms in front of its face in defence, and then slowly the beast dropped onto its knees and began to walk on all fours back toward the wooden carving from which it had sprung to life. The Indian sighed and knew he had to work fast to collect the souls of his victims, which hovered in the attic above him. Until the last soul had been captured the Indians quest for vengeance would not be over. He left the mayors soul till last for the Mayor had been his main target. The Mayor had been the instrument of the death from which the order for his family's death had come. The charm warm in his palm, soon grew uncomfortably hot as he used its powers to collect the souls of his victims, he needed to avenge his family who had been murdered by the hand of the settlers less than half a century ago. So called men of God, who had slain his family and left him to starve in the mountains. He would have starved, had it not been for the witch who had found him and looked after him as her own, while also teaching him the ancient native Indian magic needed to avenge his family's death. Now the act of revenge was complete, the Indian had no purpose in life, his goal had been accomplished. The Indian knelt down on the steps leading up to the town hall, pulled out the sacrificial knife which his ancestors had once used and gave up his life in the hope he would once again be reunited with the souls of his ancestors. As the Indians blood dripped down the steps, his spirit soared as it was reunited with his brothers and sisters. Earlier†¦ The Mayor waited for quiet, noting the next number on the item list. As the labourer wheeled the small wooden crate into the crowded village hall the crowd fell silent. â€Å"the vengeful guardian.† he introduced the item to the bidders as the man opened the hinged crate to reveal the impressive carving within. ‘A fine example of a early Native American Indian carvings.' The Mayor paused to read the description of the item; ‘Hand carved from forest Cedar.' An amused look came upon the mayors face, ‘I wouldn't want to wake him with insults, so we'll start the bidding at five hundred dollars. Do I see five hundred and ten?' the mayor asked, he scanned the faces of the townsfolk, their eyes still fixed on the carving. The Mayor noticed that a crack had appeared on the carving it ran straight down the middle. Suddenly a beam shot out of the crack, splitting the carving straight in two. Women began to scream people ran for the exits, but the doors were locked. Meanwhile, at the back of the hall an Indian man in a suit finished his pipe, then quietly moved in to the shadows behind him. His whispered chants going unnoticed as he began to rub at an object inside his jacket pocket. The first victim of the beast was the girl nearest, a beautiful young girl. She was in shock unable to move as the beast swung its razor sharp claws and severed the girl's head in one deadly accurate blow. The Indian was amused when watching the townsfolk and their feeble efforts to escape their inevitable doom†¦

A Small Excerpt From My Autobiography Essay

Insecurity shrouded me like a cold blanket. I wanted to cry, but the tears evaded my pale cheeks, held back by the numbness, the shrill, shrieking numbness that flowed though my veins chilling my blood. Comprehension escaped my every thought. My entire world had just collapsed instantaneously, like a fragile tower built from a pack of old decrepit playing cards. Yet my skeleton held me tall, erect and fixed to the spot. A manikin’s existence seemed comparable to mine. These thoughts and feelings can never be erased. They seem to be impregnated into the very structure of my biological make up, as if they are, in some strange way, a new set of genes. Provoked into action by a sight, sound or smell, each time the grooves of these emotions become etched deeper into my whole existence. Forgiveness being my salvation. Memory my tormentor. My mother’s death has left a long lasting rippling effect on my life and I am sure my brother’s too. To some extent it even spills over into my children’s lives. My children’s days have lacked the richness most grandmothers radiate to the existence of their grandchildren; their caring hands, their warm, gentle touch, their unchallenging, patient ear; knowledge and wisdom that only our elders possess through life experiences; wise words that may have infiltrated and enriched my children’s thoughts, shaping, moulding and inspiring even an infinitesimal part of their lives. But they are to naive or could it be to innocent to understand how this would affect their own mortality. I was six, just a baby really. When I look at my own children I get totally blown away. Blown away by the whole impact of this entire life-changing event. Even now as an adult I’m not sure if I could cope with such a traumatic experience. How did I cope that morning when I was awoken by the strange sounds of hushed voices? I do not even remember who told me; was not a member of my family. Not a single warming comforting face amongst any of them. From that moment on, my brothers, one younger, aged eighteen months and one older than myself, aged eight, lived with our grandparents and our aunt and uncle. We were whisked away from our roots that were, never to be returned to, or to be mentioned again; until we as adults felt the need to retrace, recollect and look at things in hindsight for our own satisfaction and personal needs. Many times I pondered and dwelt on the notion of revisiting those past concrete visions, visions edited by my own fair hand, captured and stored in the archives of my own being. At times, I wonder if I have all the pieces. I wonder if I collated and collected them as it really was. Did I miss something? Was that intentional? Do I really need to add, adjust or amend my visions and knowledge of that day? The ones I have become so accustomed to. Do I wish to discard my comfortable old slippers in exchange for a new pair that may irritate and cause blisters? These questions pose an eternal dilemma within me. I do have a wont, a desirer, a yearning you may call it, a yearning, which burns, burns for the truth. Yet truth has a partner, a partner called fear. This enormous fear hangs over me, like a guillotine hangs above the head of its victim. Would Mother Nature call that self-preservation? A disguised, darken angel, sent to protect me from the ills of truth? My life was totally transformed that spring morning. I was propelled out of a secure, warm, safe and caring environment, into a world that seemed at the time like a cold, stark, lonely and barren existence. This place was miles (not only in distance, but in emotion) from my normal surroundings. As an adult, I can compare the contrast of these two different settings with slightly more rationality. But then, all of those years ago, at that very moment in my life, analysing and evaluating the structural and materialistic things around me must have seemed an insignificant notion to have. I could not think about, let alone analyse, anything beyond my own tormented feelings of sheer pain, anguish, neglect, betrayal and above all anger. Yes anger! This was by far the overriding feeling. At times the anger was quashed by guilt, yet this sense of guilt burned deep inside fuelling the fire of the anger once more. Anger that my mother had left; disappeared, forever out of my life. Bereft of the tender, loving, affectionate hands that so often comforted me and tucked me neatly onto my warm, cosy bed. This bedtime thought always evoked copious tears to drench my pillow late at night. How dare my mother do that! Did she not know that parents live forever? Did she not realise that I would be the one that would be left to take the role of mother to her youngest son, my brother? This accolade I did not wish for. I was far too young to grasp the enormity of this duty bestowed upon me by circumstances. As a child you invent mysterious coping strategies to evade the inevitable truth. For weeks, after the death of my mother, denial was my master. I would slowly unfasten my eyes, as dawn’s uncaring hand stirred me from my serene slumber, shutting them firmly again in a flash. My logic at this age made perfect sense, I thought that if I did not see the world, then it did not exist. If the world did not exist, then I was not part of it either. If I were not part of the world, logic would have it, that I must be somewhere else. So if I were somewhere else, then that awful event had not really occurred and pain would no longer consume me. Consequently, if I were no longer in pain, it stood to reason that my mother would still be alive. At this point my body would swiftly transport me back to truth, the grinding of my empty stomach would compel me to open my eyes once more. As a child I always hoped that my eyes would be my betrayer; visions of dreams that could be dispelled and forgotten in a trice. Once again I would ardently shut my eyes, mustering up the entirety of my thoughts and powers in a last ditched attempt to dispel those awful, distressing events, hoping that they were all just feigned.

Biography of Zheng He, Chinese Admiral

Biography of Zheng He, Chinese Admiral Zheng He (1371–1433 or 1435) was a Chinese admiral and explorer who led several voyages around the Indian Ocean. Scholars have often wondered how history might have been different if the first Portuguese explorers to round the tip of Africa and move into the Indian Ocean had met up with the admirals huge Chinese fleet. Today, Zheng He is considered something of a folk hero, with temples in his honor throughout Southeast Asia. Fast Facts: Zheng He Known For: Zheng He was a powerful Chinese admiral who led several expeditions around the Indian Ocean. Also Known As: Ma HeBorn: 1371 in Jinning, ChinaDied: 1433 or 1435 Early Life Zheng He was born in 1371 in the city now called Jinning in Yunnan Province. His given name was Ma He, indicative of his familys Hui Muslim origins since Ma is the Chinese version of Mohammad. Zheng Hes great-great-great-grandfather Sayyid Ajjal Shams al-Din Omar was a Persian governor of the province under the Mongolian Emperor Kublai Khan, founder of the Yuan Dynasty that ruled China from 1279 to 1368. Ma Hes father and grandfather were both known as Hajji, the honorific title bestowed upon Muslim men who make the hajj, or  pilgrimage, to Mecca. Ma Hes father remained loyal to the Yuan Dynasty even as the rebel forces of what would become the Ming Dynasty conquered larger and larger swathes of China. In 1381, the Ming army killed Ma Hes father and captured the boy. At just 10 years old, he was made into a eunuch and sent to Beiping (now Beijing) to serve in the household of 21-year-old Zhu Di, the Prince of Yan who later became the Yongle Emperor. Ma He grew to be seven Chinese feet tall (probably around 6-foot-6), with a voice as loud as a huge bell. He excelled at fighting and military tactics, studied the works of Confucius and Mencius, and soon became one of the princes closest confidants. In the 1390s, the Prince of Yan launched a series of attacks against the resurgent Mongols, were based just north of his fiefdom. Zheng Hes Patron Takes the Throne The first emperor of the Ming Dynasty, Prince Zhu Dis eldest brother, died in 1398 after naming his grandson Zhu Yunwen as his successor. Zhu Di did not take kindly to his nephews elevation to the throne and led an army against him in 1399. Ma He was one of his commanding officers. By 1402, Zhu Di had captured the Ming capital at Nanjing and defeated his nephews forces. He had himself crowned as the Yongle Emperor. Zhu Yunwen probably died in his burning palace, although rumors persisted that he had escaped and become a Buddhist monk. Due to Ma Hes key role in the coup, the new emperor awarded him a mansion in Nanjing as well as the honorific name Zheng He. The new Yongle Emperor faced serious legitimacy problems due to his seizure of the throne and the possible murder of his nephew. According to Confucian tradition, the first son and his descendants should always inherit, but the Yongle Emperor was the fourth son. Therefore, the courts Confucian scholars refused to support him and he came to rely almost entirely upon his corps of eunuchs, Zheng He most of all. The Treasure Fleet Sets Sail Zheng Hes most important role in his masters service was being the commander-in-chief of the new treasure fleet, which would serve as the emperors principal envoy to the peoples of the Indian Ocean basin. The Yongle Emperor appointed him to head the massive fleet of 317 junks crewed by over 27,000 men that set out from Nanjing in the fall of 1405. At the age of 35, Zheng He had achieved the highest rank ever for a eunuch in Chinese history. With a mandate to collect tribute and establish ties with rulers all around the Indian Ocean, Zheng He and his armada set forth for Calicut on Indias western coast. It would be the first of seven total voyages of the treasure fleet, all commanded by Zheng He, between 1405 and 1432. During his career as a naval commander, Zheng He negotiated trade  pacts, fought pirates, installed puppet kings, and brought back tribute for the Yongle Emperor in the form of jewels, medicines, and exotic animals. He and his crew traveled and traded not only with the city-states of what are now Indonesia, Malaysia, Siam, and India, but also with the Arabian ports of modern-day Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Although Zheng He was raised Muslim  and visited the shrines of Islamic holy men in Fujian Province and elsewhere, he also venerated Tianfei, the Celestial Consort and protector of sailors. Tianfei had been a mortal woman living in the 900s who achieved enlightenment as a teenager. Gifted with foresight, she was able to warn her brother of an approaching storm at sea, saving his life. Final Voyages In 1424, the Yongle Emperor passed away. Zheng He had made six voyages in his name and brought back countless emissaries from foreign lands to bow before him, but the cost of these excursions weighed heavily on the Chinese treasury. In addition, the Mongols and other nomadic peoples were a constant military threat along Chinas northern and western borders. The Yongle Emperors cautious and scholarly elder son, Zhu Gaozhi, became the Hongxi Emperor. During his nine-month rule, Zhu Gaozhi ordered an end to all treasure fleet construction and repairs. A Confucianist, he believed that the voyages drained too much money from the country. He preferred to spend on fending off the Mongols and feeding people in famine-ravaged provinces instead. When the Hongxi Emperor died less than a year into his reign in 1426, his 26-year-old son became the Xuande Emperor. A happy medium between his proud, mercurial grandfather and his cautious, scholarly father, the Xuande Emperor decided to send Zheng He and the treasure fleet out again. Death In 1432, the 61-year-old Zheng He set out with his largest fleet ever for one final trip around the Indian Ocean, sailing all the way to Malindi on Kenyas east coast and stopping at trading ports along the way. On the return voyage, as the fleet sailed east from Calicut, Zheng He died. He was buried at sea, although legend says that the crew returned a braid of his hair and his shoes to Nanjing for burial. Legacy Although Zheng He looms as a larger-than-life figure in modern eyes both in China and abroad, Confucian scholars made serious attempts to expunge the memory of the great eunuch admiral and his voyages from history in the decades following his death. They feared a return to the wasteful spending on such expeditions. In 1477, for example, a court eunuch requested the records of Zheng Hes voyages with the intention of restarting the program, but the scholar in charge of the records told him that the documents had been lost. Zheng Hes story survived, however, in the accounts of crew members including Fei Xin, Gong Zhen, and Ma Huan, who went on several of the later voyages. The treasure fleet also left stone markers at the places they visited. Today, whether people view Zheng He as an emblem of Chinese diplomacy and soft power or as a symbol of the countrys aggressive overseas expansion, all agree that the admiral and his fleet stand among the great wonders of the ancient world. An Unlikely Source of Gratitude †and How it Changes Lives

An Unlikely Source of Gratitude – and How it Changes Lives I don’t pay much attention to my Facebook news feed, but this morning I woke up to something that caught my attention. My friend Jacob in Minneapolis had posted a message of gratitude. Gratitude that he was alive, and that he has such a supportive community of friends and family. This sort of message might not be an attention grabber if it weren’t for its context: Jacob, an avid cyclist, had been hit by a minivan on his way to work the day before his message. The story was newsworthy: the driver of the minivan had just tried to hang a toddler in her home and had hit and dragged another pedestrian for blocks as well. Jacob chose to focus on gratitude. Thankfully, Jacob escaped with his life and two breaks in his leg that required surgery. For someone whose life is focused around cycling, dancing, and skiing, an injury like this could be devastating. But, despite the fact that my friend’s bike was crushed, his spirits most definitely were not. Last year, another friend who makes his living through physical performance had a major injury that sidelined him for months. He expressed similar gratitude and has made a full, bright recovery. And there’s always the remarkable James Hinchcliffe, the only person ever to survive the type of severe internal injuries he incurred in a 2015 race car driving accident. After a remarkable recovery, he is one of the favorites on the current season of Dancing with the Stars and reports about the crash, Every day I wake up with an attitude and an outlook on life that I wouldnt have had without it. So Im reminded every day of all the good that came out of it. A famous 1978 study of recent paraplegics found that they are equally as happy if not happier than recent lottery winners – largely because they are able to gain pleasure from everyday activities that might not give pleasure to someone who has just acquired an outside item. The pleasure of a win can fade, but the pleasure of appreciating life does not. Jacob’s story, and other stories of survivors, are great examples of how gratitude can make a difference and inspire others. Perhaps because of his spirit, a GoFundMe campaign easily surpassed its $5,000 goal in just one day, climbing quickly (through almost 200 donations of $100 or less) toward the $7,000 mark. People like gratitude. Gratitude inspires gratitude! Yesterday a friend said to me, â€Å"Life it great! It is different every day!† I agree, and this week especially I am remembering to appreciate all the gifts it offers – especially those that might not look like gifts on the surface. I wish the same for you as you head into Thanksgiving week. Can you find gratitude for something you might not have felt grateful for? That’s a practice that will lead to a joyous life. Reasearch Assignment 3 - Rough Draft - Essay Example acquiesced and remained. The next day Tom had Rob Jr. write a letter to his parents telling them that he was planning to stay with the Church, as they were his "new" family. Rob Jr. was also told to demand money from his parents to cover his expenses. Rob Jr. remained with the church for a period of roughly six months. Rob Sr. and Bunny arranged to meet with Rob Jr. to give him his money for that month, and pulled him into the car and brought him home. They had to watch him carefully for about two weeks, but he finally came out of the "brainwashing." They want to sue the Church for a number of things. They want to sue on their sons behalf for the intentional torts that were inflicted on him, as well as for the torts committed against them.
